How do Adiabatic Refrigerant Coolers and Condensers work?

Our Adiabatic Refrigerant Coolers and Condensers are heat exchangers dedicated to NH3 and other refrigerants. The calories are rejected dry in the atmosphere. As soon as climatic conditions increase, our coolers and condensers use adiabatic evaporation of water to precool the air. Thus, in complete safety and without water treatment, they dissipate the calories, to cool down or to condense the refrigerant at a temperature lower than that of the ambient air.

Our adiabatic cooler and condenser solution results from the combination of a dry cooler, or condenser, and an adiabatic pre-cooling section. We have designed this pre-cooling section in order to lower the temperature of the ambient air by evaporating water on a media, pads, designed specifically for this use.

Our ONYX adiabatic technology is available in a hybrid version, thus using the same equipment to evacuate the calories from the cooling water circuit of the chiller unit compressor.

What are the advantages of ONYX adiabatic condenser?

ONYX adiabatic condensers comply with European hygienic standards. They have the following advantages and characteristics:

  • The most secure adiabatic cooling solution against the risks of legionella proliferation = hygienic design
  • Cooling to a temperature lower than that of the ambient air;
  • Cooling of the chiller compressor circuit on the same equipment;
  • Very low power consumption (efficiency higher than IE5) Technology in compliance with Eco conception (UE) 327/2011 concerning Directive 2009/125/CE application (ErP) for minimum efficiency thresholds after 202.x.
  • No external fouling of the tube coils;
  • No water spray / aerosol in airflow;
  • Very low water consumption and no treatment needed;
  • Very low water consumption and no treatment needed
    Access to the interior by full opening;
  • Sealing and pressure compliant with PED.

Questions and answers about refrigerant coolers and condensers

How do a refrigerant cooler and condensers work?

It cools refrigerants by dissipating heat into the air. At high outdoor temperatures, adiabatic cooling is used, where water evaporates and lowers the air temperature for effective cooling of the refrigerant.

What are the benefits?

Low energy consumption, minimal water consumption, in adiabatic cooling, and hygienic design without water spray – reducing the risk of legionella.

What is free cooling and how does it relate to refrigerant coolers?

Free cooling means that you use cold outdoor air to cool a property or process when the temperature allows. The heart of the solution is a refrigerant cooler that makes the job easy and has really low operating costs. Smart, energy-efficient and cost-saving.

What is adiabatic cooling?

At outdoor temperatures above 20°C, heat transfer from refrigerant becomes less efficient. This allows the air to be slightly humidified before it passes through the radiator. As the water evaporates, the temperature drops, providing better cooling capacity even on hot days. The air is humidified in specially designed pads where water and air meet to avoid water droplets accompanying the air stream, which would lead to a Legionella risk.

How do you maintain a refrigerant cooler or condenser?

Clean water distribution and pads regularly, check the fans and check for any leaks.

Is the system environmentally friendly?

Yes. The system often uses water/glycol or other refrigerants and, above all, is very energy efficient.

What is ONYX?

A clever combination of a dry condenser and an adiabatic cooler. Also available as a hybrid that cools both the condenser and compressor circuit.

Is the system easy to maintain?

Yes, it has easy access, the protected tube bundles and it is pressure tested according to PED for safe operation.
